Due to a perceived need to assist the spouses of personnel in the Services, Congress required the Department of Defense to provide suitable benefits. After a test period, The Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts (MSCAA) program was established with the purpose of providing appropriate military spouse education benefits. Improving qualifications is intended to improve job availability and prospects worldwide.

As such, the training must provide qualifications which are in demand all over the the world. There is a list of approved schools available online. Qualifications included in the program include degrees and a full range of the various professional qualifications. Expenses for items such as tuition, licensing, and fees for credentials are permitted.

Items which are not covered include computers, application fees, graduation, and membership costs as well as a range of other expenses such as child care and parking. Currently a lifetime limit of $6000 for this benefit applies. Unfortunately, the Coast Guard service does not fall under this scheme.

The major category of spouses who qualify are those of personnel of the different DoD services. In addition, ancillary services such as the National Guard and Reserve are also included in the MSCAA, subject to certain requirements. Those married to qualifying members who have been injured, fallen ill, or even killed would be able to participate, as well.

A problem is that service postings can change suddenly, without warning. Because it is so flexible, most of those eligible find prefer online college tuition. It can easily be continued wherever in the world a married couple might be posted, ideal to cope with the uncertainties of the military life. Luckily most of the approved training is readily available online.

This is a helpful program, although not comprehensive. With better qualifications, a new world can open up for spouses and they will be better prepared to cope with the lives of family members of active duty personnel. Any challenges are more easily surmountable. Military spouse education benefits make these careers more attractive.
